We Asked Surgeons What "True" Custom LASIK Means to Them–and What More It Could Be Offering

There's been a lot of talk about what makes for a "true" custom LASIK system, so we asked leading refractive surgeons what "true" custom LASIK means to them–and, more importantly, what it should mean. Their insights hit at the heart of what "true" custom LASIK lacks–and how OptiLASIK® Laser Vision Correction can provide you, your patients, and your practice with more.

"'True' custom LASIK should mean giving the patient the best vision...for their particular needs."

What does "true" custom LASIK mean to you? What should it offer you, your practice, and your patients?

"'True' custom LASIK should mean giving the patient the best vision that the state-of-the-art technology allows for their particular needs. Whether this means Wavefront Optimized® LASIK for someone with low pre-existing higher order aberrations (HOAs)...or a younger patient with a greater amount of HOAs requiring Wavefront-Guided LASIK, custom LASIK means delivering what the patient needs."

"The ability to have more tools in our treatment toolbox allows us to treat more patients, customizing the treatment to their needs..."

What does "true" custom LASIK mean to you? What should it offer you, your practice, and your patients?

"Custom LASIK, in my mind, is the ability to offer your patients the treatment that best suits their visual needs. Whether it's the ability to do a Wavefront-Guided treatment to reduce existing aberrations, or a treatment that provides good distance vision with some ability to be functionally useful at near distances, true customization is providing a treatment that best answers the patient’s needs."

What can multiple LASIK treatment options do for you, and your patients?

"The ability to have more tools in our treatment toolbox allows us to treat more patients, customizing the treatment to their needs, and providing the quality of vision necessary to grow the LASIK market."

"To me, custom LASIK means a unique treatment for each individual patient..."

What does "true" custom LASIK mean to you? What should it offer you, your practice, and your patients?

"To me, custom LASIK means a unique treatment for each individual patient... It would mean the ability to reliably identify the key aberrations in the optics and to identify where those aberrations are coming from. It would also mean the ability to optimize the corneal shape based on the prevailing optics... The end result would be a prolate cornea of the appropriate curvature that would allow for outstanding optics now and in the future..."

"'True' custom LASIK should mean that the personal features of the patient are evaluated and treated during the procedure."

What does "true" custom LASIK mean to you? What should it offer you, your practice, and your patients?

"'True' custom LASIK should mean that the personal features of the patient are evaluated and treated during the procedure. This would include Wavefront-Guided procedures that maintain the prolate shape of the cornea..."

What does "true" custom LASIK mean to you? What should it offer you, your practice, and your patients?

"'True' custom LASIK should mean designing a laser treatment to meet the patient's visual needs in concert with analysis of the visual systems’ optics… I place great emphasis on understanding the patient's visual requirements before surgery: their professional needs, and personal interests. I think this is the starting point for 'true' custom LASIK.

With both Wavefront Optimized® and Wavefront-Guided treatments, we step closer to true visual performance and results. The visual benefits, through the use of aspheric ablation profiles and enhanced treatment application (ie, speed), ensure predictable outcomes and minimize patient treatment time. WaveLight® Allegretto Wave® Eye-Q Laser technology offers you the confidence that you are providing the most advanced technology available...

You and your staff will appreciate the positive feedback your refractive patients will spontaneously provide, as well as the reduced enhancement rates and tighter visual endpoints. Achieving great patient visual outcomes after LASIK usually means success, but nothing says 'I am happy with my LASIK experience and visual results' better than patient referrals."

"Each patient is unique, and we need to be able to offer whatever is best for their individual visual needs."

What does "true" custom LASIK mean to you? What should it offer you, your practice, and your patients?

"'True' custom LASIK should mean the ability to have as many options as possible to offer patients. Each patient is unique, and we need to be able to offer whatever is best for their individual visual needs. I consider "true" custom LASIK to therefore be all of our current options; standard LASIK, Wavefront Optimized® LASIK, Wavefront-Guided LASIK, and, one day, topography-based LASIK. While Wavefront Optimized® LASIK is an excellent technique, I believe I can better 'customize' a patient with all of these options..."

"'True' custom LASIK should put the surgeon back in the driver's seat, so that clinical decisions about the best treatment strategy are determined by a well-educated surgeon..."

What does "true" custom LASIK mean to you? What should it offer you, your practice, and your patients?

"'True' custom LASIK should give the surgeon the ability to control all aspects of the treatment, including not only basic parameters like the size of the optical and transition zones, but also more advanced aspects of treatment–for instance, whether treatment should be sphero-cylindrical...customized according to the optical system of the eye, or to the shape of the anterior surface of the cornea.

In other words, 'true' custom LASIK should put the surgeon back in the driver's seat, so that clinical decisions about the best treatment strategy are determined by a well-educated surgeon, using the laser as a versatile, flexible tool to implement that strategy."
